Top 5 Celebrity Weight Loss Transformations

It seems like a new celebrity weight loss success story is published nearly every day. But are their methods of weight loss safe? Should you try them out?
A registered dietitian weighs in on the pros and cons.

Sara Ali Khan

According to the Daily Times, Bollywood star Sara Ali Khan intentionally lost more than 30 kg (66 lbs.) over a period of 1.5 years. She attributes her weight loss to “working out and maintaining a disciplined life.”

The actress says that she swapped out foods like pizza and chocolate for a balanced diet that includes healthier salads, whole grains, fruits, and lean proteins. Choosing nutrient-rich foods over higher calorie junk foods is a smart strategy for weight loss. In addition, the protein and fiber in the healthier choices should help her to feel full after meals. Including regular exercise in her life should help her to maintain.

This is weight loss well-done!

John Goodman

Former “Roseanne” star John Goodman lost 100 lbs. after reducing his intake of sugar and giving up alcohol. He told AARP magazine that he attributes his weight loss to “portion control and ‘I don’t need it.’”
These days, Good Housekeeping magazine reports that he consumes a diet of vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins, including protein shakes. Due to a history of knee issues, he sticks to low-impact exercises. Goodman is a great example of a person fitting a personalized activity plan into his life that works with his medical condition. The main downside to this plan is that he may end up short on certain B vitamins if he is not consuming grains. With a well-planned diet, this will not be an issue.

John McCririck

A recent article in the Daily Mail states that horse racing pundit John McCririck lost over three stone (42 lbs.) through a combination of factors.

Among these were a severe case of the flu, depression over a job loss, as well as dietary changes. He cites both portion control and eliminating potatoes as examples of these diet changes. While portion control and cutting out a trigger food can help with deliberate weight loss, it is very important to get enough nutrients during illness to promote healing.

McCririck shared that his long bout of flu negatively impacted his ability to exercise and caused some unintentional weight loss. During a serious illness, the focus should generally shift away from weight loss to getting better with rest, reducing stress, and a diet rich in nutrients.

Cheryl Burke

Cheryl Burke from “Dancing with the Stars” lost 15 lbs. in 2014 and has managed to keep the weight off since that time. How did she do it? Burke told the Daily Mail, “It’s all about portion control.”

While Burke did not use a specific diet plan, such as Atkins, she does generally stick to nutrient-rich, minimally processed foods (think Greek yogurt and lentils). Instead of having a diet mentality, Burke says that she does allow herself occasional indulgences as part of her lifestyle. Did you notice that this is the third celebrity that stated that they used portion control for weight loss? The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes that portion control is one of the evidence-based methods that can help people to lose weight.

Bristol Palin

In a Daily Mail article, Bristol Palin credits her recent weight loss success to the use of a “skinny tea” product. Palin claimed that the tea helps her to manage her sweet tooth and lessens her cravings for sugar-sweetened drinks.

While consuming fewer sugar-sweetened beverages is an evidence-based method that can help with weight loss, the use of skinny and detox teas is not. Many of these teas can be dehydrating, so that much of the weight loss is water weight. Unsweetened green tea or water infused with fruits and vegetables both tend to be more hydrating than the skinny or detox teas. In addition, plain green tea and infused water are also less expensive.

While it is great that Palin is skipping soda and including physical activity, I recommend tweaking this diet plan by switching out the skinny tea.
